The Psychiatrist Specialist in Health Reform

Many physicians are seen as the problem in the economy of health care. There have been many articles in the media about the health benefits of non-physician care. Many people wonder if it is possible to combine decades of specialized education into a single-year training program. So, what are the possible benefits to my patients by seeing a psychiatrist? Insurance companies have perpetuated the belief that psychiatrists are only trained in the use and administration of drugs. You may be surprised to know that psychiatrists undergo three years of training and supervision in a wide range of types of psychotherapy.

Understanding the diagnosis and the implications for daily living is a crucial first step. Advertisements in the media and the herbal industry tout treatments that are said to help depression. These include herbs, massage, and integrative options. Advertising does not differentiate between mild and severe depression. For mild depression, alternative treatment is possible. This treatment is usually responsive to distraction. Mild depression symptoms by definition are mild and don't interfere with personal function. For example, if you feel depressed or blue when you wake up, you can call a friend or go back to work and the feeling goes away. You may experience severe depression symptoms like a persistent intrusive thought about suicide, an inability or difficulty getting out of bed, loss of energy and appetite, as well as difficulties with concentration and focus. There are many symptoms that can be experienced and the impact they have on daily life. However, it is clear that depression can be treated with any type of intervention, regardless of its severity.

Vogue Magazine May 2009, article "Pregnant Pause" was a moving description of daily challenges for those working in the subspecialty in reproductive psychiatry. An article about a pregnant woman with bizarre obsessive and eating phobias described her. This impeded her daily functioning. However, she was found to have mild depression. She was treated by her primary physician. The article highlighted some of the side effects of antidepressant therapy during pregnancy. It highlighted the mild illness of the patient and stated that she had been given inaccurate information. As the stigma of Psychiatrist Austin TX, patients with severe illnesses are often treated by those who do not have psychiatric training.

Reputable magazines are often not able to address the severity and may suggest interventions that do not have scientific merit. As a psychiatrist specializing in reproductive health, I can discuss the risks and benefits of treatment options with patients. The Pregnancy Decision Handbook for Women afflicted with Depression (awarded for excellence) was created as an informational tool to assist in the creation of individual treatment plans. The severity of the illness can impact which treatment options women have.
